Medical research is ongoing for a type 1 diabetes cure. One approach being looked into is to think of diabetes as a result of an auto-immune attack, leading to a shutdown in insulin production. Central to this approach is the use of a drug called BCG. BCG is an inexpensive anti-tuberculosis vaccine. Researchers are trying to use BCG to stop the body’s T-cells from attacking the pancreas’s insulin producing cells. If this works, it should allow the pancreas to recover and regenerate and begin producing insulin again. The idea to jump start insulin production is almost an alien concept. It was formerly thought that once the pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin, that it would no longer be able to produce it again. In that sense, the idea of using BCG is a radical idea. It is also a giant step towards a type 1 diabetes cure. Potentially, this is a cheap, non-invasive cure for an otherwise incurable disease.
